Bethany is a Christian Community that provides a warm, accepting environment for kids with special needs.   

Students will learn and practice social skills through the study of beginning acting techniques in a safe, supportive and fun environment.    The group will be faith-based.  The theme will be that diversity—the fact that we are all different in some way—is created by God.  Through faith, we can find out our full potential, gain confidence to overcome obstacles, and give love to others.

Students will study techniques such as improvisation, tableau, mime, self scripting and comedy.  The class will work on completing scripts and working as a team.   For the students with Asperger’s or High Functioning Autism, the class will teach reading contextual clues, body language and figuring out what others are thinking.  Understanding and responding to non-verbal clues such as facial expression and tone of voice will be studied as well as understanding and expressing emotions. 

The class will include youth aides that are interested in acting as well, and who will contribute to the group learning experience.  

Each class will end with a short recap of what we’ve learned and a prayer for the students and their concerns.  

At the end of the school year, the class will put on a short performance of skills studied for an audience of family and friends.

9 to 13 students, age 13 and above.  Of these, roughly two-thirds of the class will be youth/young adults with Asperger’s or High Functioning Autism.  

Parents will be required to sign a liability waiver.
