LEOH Background

LEOH – THE EARLY YEARS
Life Enrichment of Houston (LEOH) was founded by and nurtured by the vision of Eveleth (Dickie) Harshman. In 1981, Dickie Harshman, a retired teacher and member of Bethany United Methodist Church, shared with neighborhood churches and civic clubs her enthusiasm and determination to establish a program for seniors similar to one she had attended in Atlanta.
Leaders in five southwest area churches and two civic clubs shared her conviction that "the elderly" would benefit from a program that would give them a means to develop new skills, meet new people, stimulate their minds and learn how to support and use community services. Life Enrichment of Houston held its First Session that Fall at Bethany. The brochure from the First Session in 1981 noted that the acronym LEOH also stands for Life, Energy, Optimism, and Hope. The logo for LEOH is quite logically a lion.
A MATURE LEOH
LEOH remains a non-denominational, non-political, non-profit organization where volunteers blend their ideas, energies, and talents to enrich their lives! It has been the pattern used by other senior organizations in Houston. Currently, LEOH meets at Bethany and holds two eight-week sessions during the year. The Spring Session is from mid-March to mid-May, and the Fall Session is from mid-September to mid-November.
LEOH continues to provide learning for senior adults. Spanish courses are taught by Maura Rodriguez, MD, and the Watercolor Painting course is taught by professional artist Portia Bell. Two afternoon Bridge classes draw many dedicated players with varying levels of experience. Our 10 o'clock class currently emphsizes art. Our Town Hall series brings us excellent presentations from speakers with many different backgrounds. Every session, LEOH members go on several one-day trips. The trips are generally in the greater Houston area, but they may range from Austin to Beaumont to Nadogdoches. Please check the brochure listings in the LEOH Sessions section of this website for the current Session program.
